Who Was Manisha?

Manisha was described by friends and villagers as calm, studious, and well-mannered. She left her school on August 11, 2025, planning to visit a nursing college nearby to enquire about a course. She never returned home, and as darkness fell, her family’s concern grew with each unanswered phone call.

The Discovery & Initial Investigation

On August 13, Manisha’s body was discovered in a field near a canal in Singhani village. The shocking nature of her death—her throat reportedly slit—sparked immediate outrage. Initial police investigation pointed towards suicide, citing the presence of insecticide in her body and a note found with her belongings, alongside evidence that Manisha bought poison herself.

Protests & Public Outcry

The phrase “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) was repeatedly invoked during marches, with protesters arguing that Haryana’s daughters don’t feel safe in their own state.

Administrative & Political Responses

Faced with mounting pressure, Haryana’s Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini ordered an immediate suspension of five police officers and transferred the Bhiwani SP. Still, opposition leaders blasted the government’s handling as “negligent and irresponsible,” describing the move as insufficient. The situation escalated enough to prompt a temporary ban on mobile internet and SMS services in Bhiwani and neighboring Charkhi Dadri.

After days of unrest, the government agreed to hand over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), pledging full transparency and justice for Manisha and her family.

Medical Report & Unanswered Questions

Multiple autopsies, including a forensic report from Rohtak’s PGIMS, helped clarify the injuries. Doctors noted lacerations on the neck with a “gnawing effect” consistent with postmortem scavenging, not from a weapon. The report also ruled out sexual assault. Despite these findings, core doubts remain unresolved in public opinion: Was it suicide or murder? Did a rushed or negligent investigation delay crucial action? Was Manisha’s death preventable if police acted sooner?
