In August 2025, the state of Haryana was gripped by grief and outrage after the sudden death of Manisha, a 19-year-old playschool teacher from Bhiwani’s Singhani village. Her story became a symbol of the demand for justice for women and a flashpoint for public anger towards law enforcement and governance in the region.
The murder has triggered massive protests, with villagers blocking roads and holding mahapanchayats. Her family, alleging police inaction, have refused to hold a funeral. The NHRC has sought a report, and opposition parties are attacking the Haryana government.

Who Was Manisha?
Manisha was described by friends and villagers as calm, studious, and well-mannered. She left her school on August 11, 2025, planning to visit a nursing college nearby to enquire about a course. She never returned home, and as darkness fell, her family’s concern grew with each unanswered phone call.
The Discovery & Initial Investigation
On August 13, Manisha’s body was discovered in a field near a canal in Singhani village. The shocking nature of her death—her throat reportedly slit—sparked immediate outrage. Initial police investigation pointed towards suicide, citing the presence of insecticide in her body and a note found with her belongings, alongside evidence that Manisha bought poison herself.
However, these explanations did little to quell public anger. Her family and thousands of villagers questioned the police’s conclusions and insisted that justice must be served
Protests & Public Outcry
Refusing to cremate Manisha until her killers were arrested, her family stood firm. In the days that followed, the region saw impromptu protests, road blockades, and candlelight vigils. Students, farmers, and women’s groups came out in force, demanding action. Markets remained shut and a mahapanchayat (community assembly) was held to support the quest for justice.
People vented their frustration at the police’s initial response, which allegedly involved dismissing the missing person’s complaint and offering insensitive reassurances. The phrase “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) was repeatedly invoked during marches, with protesters arguing that Haryana’s daughters don’t feel safe in their own state.
Administrative & Political Responses
Faced with mounting pressure, Haryana’s Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini ordered an immediate suspension of five police officers and transferred the Bhiwani SP. Still, opposition leaders blasted the government’s handling as “negligent and irresponsible,” describing the move as insufficient. The situation escalated enough to prompt a temporary ban on mobile internet and SMS services in Bhiwani and neighboring Charkhi Dadri.
After days of unrest, the government agreed to hand over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), pledging full transparency and justice for Manisha and her family.
Medical Report & Unanswered Questions
Multiple autopsies, including a forensic report from Rohtak’s PGIMS, helped clarify the injuries. Doctors noted lacerations on the neck with a “gnawing effect” consistent with postmortem scavenging, not from a weapon. The report also ruled out sexual assault. Despite these findings, core doubts remain unresolved in public opinion: Was it suicide or murder? Did a rushed or negligent investigation delay crucial action? Was Manisha’s death preventable if police acted sooner?
Why Manisha Case Matters
The Manisha case is more than a single tragedy. It exposed the cracks in local law enforcement, galvanized student and women’s groups, and forced a rethink of government accountability in Haryana. Her story has become a rallying point for those demanding safer environments for women and more responsive, compassionate governance.
Manisha’s tragic death remains a haunting reminder that justice must not only be done—it must be seen to be done, for the sake of every daughter and every citizen seeking safety and dignity in society.
If you found this story important, share it to spread awareness for justice and women’s safety.
